This is pretty gross isn't it? |
Disclaimer
* Before I start this I would just like to say that I don’t intend to insult anyone here. If you sort your movies in one of the ways I recommend you don’t, do not take offense. We are all different people with different ways of sorting movies. Although I call this “The Essential Guide To Sorting Your Movie Collection,” if you have your own way of sorting that is different from mine then by all means go ahead. I just typed this up mostly due to boredom and thought it would be fun to share. So without any other warnings let's just jump into it.
Keep it Alphabetical:
This is BY FAR the most important part of keeping your movie collection organized. Sorting your movies from 'A' to 'Z' will keep your movies in a neat, tidy order and most importantly, easy to find. Want to throw on Pulp Fiction? No problem! There it is under the 'P'’s where it should be. Unfortunately, some movie companies out there do not want to make it easy for you. Every now and then there may be some exceptions. Yes, I know it sucks but I’m here to steer you in the right direction; to let you know when it is acceptable to not go the alphabetical route.
Movies that start with numbers:
There are two different ways you can go about
sorting movies that begin with a number. If you have movies like “28 Days
Later” or “300” there are two acceptable places to put them. First off, you can
put both under 'T', since both numbers start with a T, but I wouldn't recommend
it. My recommendation is to start off your collection with those titles and put
them all in numerical order, (obviously) before you get to “A”. Then you are
off to the races!
Ignore "The's" and "A's":
For movies that start with the words "The" or "A" then file them under whatever word starts next. "The Crow" should go under 'C' and "A Nightmare on Elm Street" should go under 'N'. If you put every movie you had that started with "The" under 'T' then your 'T' section would go on forever, it’s just foolish. Foolish I say!!
The Differently Named Sequel Problem:
Just about the worse thing in the world is
when a movie studio decides to fuck with the name of a series. Take The Evil
Dead series for example. You have The Evil Dead, Evil Dead 2 and then Army of
Darkness. Uh-oh! One of these things isn't like the other! So what do
we do with Army of Darkness? If we are going with our strict alphabetical order
then it goes under 'A' but then you are breaking up the series. Seems like
you’re damned if you do and you’re damned if you don’t. Well I believe
this is one of those rare cases when the alphabetical order rule has to be over
ridden. Army of Darkness should go under E after the first two Evil Dead
movies. The worse offender of this is the James Bond series. What do you do
with that one? Put each one alphabetical under its own name, in order of
release date under the number for 007, or under B for Bond? Well if I were you,
I would just avoid this entire mess, buy the box set to save you from the
stress! If you don’t want to own them all then I’d put them under 007 in the
order of release date. Still, if you buy a series in a box set then your work
is done for you... just put it where the box tells you. No need to worry about
how the hell you’re going to organize those troublesomely titled Rambo movies,
just keep them all in the box, put them under R and relax (which coincidentally
enough also starts with 'R').
Boxsets that are too big to fit on the shelf:
This can be a serious problem. If the box is the same height of your DVDs or blu-rays, then you can put them where they should go in the alphabetical order of things. On the other hand, if they are too tall then the only real solution is to put them on top of the shelf in all their glory.
Do Not Mix Formats:
Let’s face it, as movie fans we all have movies showcased on various types of formats (DVD, VHS, Blu-ray). Some movies simply haven’t made it to every format. On top of that, if you have a big DVD collection then it is damn expensive to replace it! This may result in some people mixing their DVDs with their Blu-rays. There may even be some VHS in there as well. One of the main points of putting your movies on a shelf is to keep them organized and looking neat. How can this be accomplished when you have cases of various sizes mixing with one another? It just doesn't work. Your DVDs should be all together in one place, your Blu-rays together in another place, and your VHS in another if you still have any of those lying around. The best idea for those pesky VHS' that we all love too much to get rid of (we are all guilty of this) is be placed on the bottom one or two rows of your shelf. Depending on how many you have of course. There is no way that they get nearly as much play as your DVDs or Blu-rays, if any, so keep them closer to the floor out of eye level.
Movies and TV Series Should Not be Mixed:
Just like the title says, movies and TV shows should not mingle together. There is nothing more annoying than looking through a movie collection and having to skip through twenty seasons of "The Simpsons". Just like with the alphabetical order, there is an exception for this, but only one. That exception is when your TV series collection is small. Do you have 200 movies but only own one TV Series? Well if so, then put that series in with the movies! No harm no fowl and it is pointless to have a section just for TV if you only have one or two different shows.
Do Not Organize by Genre:
Seriously don’t do this! If so, the organization of your collection is doomed from the start! More people fall into this trap than any other, especially when your collection is just starting out. It makes sense to divide your movies by genre, who wouldn't want to keep all of their action movies together? The big problem though is when you’re going into sub-genres or even worse, a crossing of genres. First, the sub-genres. Look at horror, if you’re going the sub-genre route you have slashers, zombies, vampires and any other number of monster movie types. Giving all of those their little mini-sections in the horror section is just tedious. Then you have the cross genre movies. Where the hell do you put something like “Tremors”? It would be right at home in either your horror or comedy sections. How about “Big Trouble In Little China”? Action? Yes. Comedy? Yes. Fantasy? Yes. That’s three different genres that you could conceivably put that movie! If your collection is small and you don’t plan on expanding it, then go for it! Otherwise you’re just splitting up your collection in a dozen or more different sections and complicating the ease of finding that one movie you might want to watch.
Do not Organize by Director or Actor:
Okay. This takes the multiple genre problem and makes it even worse. Is sorting by director really an option? I have one friend who seems to think so, but where do you go from there? How do you sort the directors? By name? By who you like the most? By who you have the most movies of? Once you have all that figured out what do you do when you have a person visiting who isn't in the know on which directors directed what? From someone on the outside looking in, the collection just looks like one big unsorted mess. If you’re sorting by actors you have all of those same problems you get with sorting by director plus another very big problem. What actor or actress do you sort them under? Take "The Expendables" for example. Where do you put that? Under Stallone? Statham? Li? Okay well the obvious choice here is Stallone, but you can understand my argument right? It is just a massive mess waiting to happen and trust me, it won’t be a long wait either.
Do Not 'Not' Organize Your Movies:
Above all else this is the most important rule to go by. It sounds weird to say do not 'not' organize your movie's, it’s a double negative but I’m sure you understand. For this one I’m talking to you crazy ass backwards people that have absolutely no organization whatsoever. You folks who take your movie and put them down wherever they may lie in no order at all. Or even worse! The people who don't match their cases with their movies!! For example, you open up the "Inception" case and the "Fight Club" movie is sitting in there! WHAT THE HELL IS THAT!? Even if you can manage to find the case of the movie you’re looking for, you will then be on a wild goose chase tracking down case after case with the wrong movie in it.Twenty minutes later and you are so frustrated that you don’t even want to watch a movie anymore. If you are one of those people you have my sympathies and are unfortunately too far gone to help.
So in Conclusion:
I know it sounds like there are too many
'do not’s' but trust me it is all for the best. Just go the alphabetical route.
Your collection and any guest will thank you for it. All that said, I know that
there are some of you out there who do indeed sort their collections in the
ways I say you shouldn't That works just fine for you and good for
you on making that work. I think my obsessive compulsive head would just
explode thinking about my collection in any other order than the way it
is.
This is not my collection but it sure is a thing of beauty isn't it? |
Good points! I don't have a huge collection, but if I continue to get more, I'll take this all into consideration, bud.
ReplyDeleteThis is exactly how I organize my collection, however, and I know this is crazy, but I mix my Blu-ray and dvd because my collection is approaching 1000 and out of those only maybe 100 are SD, so I don't mind mixing. Also TV series are separate and music/concerts are separate but to me those don't count as genre. I also now keep everything in nice looking binders which is not my first preference but I ran out of wall space, then moved the collection into a closet, and after a couple years the closet was full from floor to ceiling. So unfortunately I had no choice but to opt for binder organization. Differently named sequels are annoying especially in series of more than 3. I used to keep them entirely alphabetical, dividing the series but once I bought the Harry Potter collection I realized how dumb an idea that was.
ReplyDeleteHow about I have a documentary dvd that on the case it says 2-Pac 4-Ever....but the disc says TuPac 4 Ever.. Lol.... T section perhaps?

There is one exception in my opinion to where you said don't mix formats or put into genres. I have a bunch of movies that are movies that are females. I also have the originals. Its my mow and then section. And some of the dvda aren't available in blu ray. Thanks for your advice

ReplyDeleteI get that "the" should be ignored but sometimes a movie title with "the" seems to be an important word in the title like "the man from uncle" should those movie go under t?
ReplyDeleteHey Theodore, every time I go to sort my collection I read your article, and I just can't get past 'The Differently Named Sequel Problem'. The one that drives me nuts is Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons, Inferno. D, A, I, are they for real? I also don't agree with your Bond or 007 for the James Bond movies, because I always thought The Differently Named Sequel Problem was solved by going with the letter of the first movie in the series, so with my example Angels and Demons, and Inferno both go under D after Da Vinci Code. In that case all my Bond movies would be under D, because their the sequel to Dr. No. At what stage in a franchise do you make the decision to list when via character name and not any degree of the title? I would like to organise by genre but know that doesn't work (I will find a way though). Thanks for the article, and I wouldn't mind your opinion on the above. Thanks.
ReplyDeleteI have my collection mostly organized. I have (or my wife has rather) several dvd sets that have 4 different movies. In one of them she has the 3 of the 4 already on Dvd. The other she only has them in the 4 pack. She also has "You've Got Mail" on Blu and it comes with a copy of "The Shop Around the Corner" how do I file these? Should I take the extra movie out of "Mail" and put it in another seperate case?
ReplyDeleteThanks for Sharingtop 10 bollywood collection
ReplyDeleteHow do you feel about mixing tv shows and movies if they have the same character and actor. Examples: Firefly (tv) and Serenity (movie); The Librarian (movies) and The Librarians (tv); Burn Notice (tv) (movie); Prison Break (tv) (movie) (event series); Psych (tv) (movie***soon***).
ReplyDeleteI allow them to sit next to and take on the name of the tv series and put them where they go chronologically like I would any sequel.
This is how I have been sorting my movies for quite a few now, but I find that it is hard to keep it up because when I buy a new movie, especially one starting with the letter "A" or a number, then I have to shift pretty much every movie I own to make room. I tried to keep a space in each section of my shelves, but I eventually fill those spaces in and then have the same issue all over again. For now I am just putting all of my new movies at the end and eventually I will do a mass sort of them all. So how do you handle that issue?
ReplyDeleteGreat article.. just one disagreement, I've got my blurays mixed up with my DVD's. didn't used to have it that way, but when I go to watch "Rocky", I don't want to go to the blu-rays, find I don't have it, then go to the DVD's.. I just go to the "R's" and then pick the best format I own. Cheers!!!
ReplyDeleteI'm getting ready to start alphabetizing tonight and this is my only dilemma... to put the blu rays with the dvds or to seperate them. I think I may put them with the rest since it will make it easier for my kids, but I'm not sure about the look of it.
DeleteI agree with everything but I have multiple dvd's with different movies in them. I have a few of the 10 packs because my husband loves old westerns. How do you organize these?
ReplyDeleteI have my movies organized by genre. I don't have a big movie collection so I don't find it that necessary to organize in alphabetical order. I only own about 150-160 movies and that's dvd and blu ray. I have genres filed together like disaster, action, adventure, fantasy, comedy, thriller, biopics, Disney and Marvel movies. The only problem is there's a few movies I'm not sure where to place. It works for me, depending on what genre I feel like watching I can find it easily.
ReplyDeleteEven though the genre arrangement is the most fun, I for one, who owns 5000+ dvd:s, can agree that it is a bitch with all those sub-genres and cross-genres. So yes, the alpabetical arrangement is probably the best one. But there are a few problems with that, which you did not address.
ReplyDeleteTake me for example. I live in a non-english speaking country, but most of the movies I purchase are obviously made in the USA. And often these movies get a title in my native language. So what to choose than? An other problem you didn't address is the fact that the same movie can be released under different titles. Take "Cubic" with Christian Bale. Or should it be "Equilibrium" with Christian Bale? The same has two different titles. There are plenty of examples of this.
And how about those dvd releases with two, three, four or even more titles collected in one standard dvd case. What to choose then...? :P
So my partner and I are in process of building a NAS media center for all of our movies, shows, music, and games, so we wont have to deal with all of the cases taking up space - we are in the process of downsizing to a tiny home and space is at a premium.
ReplyDeleteFor right now we are starting with just the movies and shows, and we ARE keeping some physical copies that are boxed sets or collectors editions, but everything else, the cases go, and we just keep the discs for backup. The NAS system will be indexed multiple ways so you can browse by title or genre or director, however you decide. But until we get that up and running, we have the discs sorted alphabetically for ease of searching, AND I have an indexed list (like a menu) that sorts by genre, so you can decide what you want to watch, then go grab it out of the book that is sorted alphabetically.
It isnt a perfect system that will work for everyone, but it suits our needs for now.
I definitely agree with most of the rules. I mix DVD and Blu-ray I'm not going to break up a series because some are regular and some are Blu-ray. I keep mine alphabetical with numbers in front. All series together even if it's like wreck it Ralph and then Ralph Breaks the internet. They are sitting right next to each other. Now the problem about getting multiple movies in one case. Ok I bought a case with 4 different movies different genres different directors everything so I see 2 solutions 1 you can put them in their own case it solves the dilemma of where to place it but takes up alot of space. Space I as a huge collector don't have as I have thousands of movies. The other solution is just put it under the first listed movie such as if u have Italian job and Escape room just put it under I. My other suggestion is ( remember my collection is huge so I have a record of all my movies on a file) to write down under my I collum Italian Job and write down Escape Room under E and next to both I have written where it is alphabetically so I put I and I put what other movie it has in the case. So I put Italian Job Rating, Whether it's Blu-ray or DVD, then I put the other movies in case. So I put Escape Room, Rating, Blu-ray, I- Italian Job. This way I don't buy the same movie cause I'm not sure if I own it or not. Make since? My old system So I'm in the store browsing come across Escape room um do I own this movie .... I go under E and it's not there so I would buy it right? Wrong I already have it in my new system cause under E I will have the note that I mentioned earlier. Saves me from having duplicate copies and having to return the movie once I see my mistake. And always skip the "The" or A" but I hate Dr. And Mr. Mrs. I'm wondering if I should skip those and just go to next word but then I'm not sure Dr. Dolittle and Mr.Magoo would be ok they are both same beginning letters but then you have Mr. And Mrs. Smith Dr. Strange Mr. Peabody it's a headache for sure. Lol. Anyway I say do what's easiest and best for you. Hope this helps. 😁
ReplyDeleteI do mine by studios and date like old to new Disney Sony etc tv series I put them together but not with the single movies so far working with me I was wondering what people do yep you did what lots of people do I’m wondering if you like this idea or not

ReplyDeleteI'm currently guilty of 'by genre' for my DVDs (though not my blu-rays), but I'm thinking of changing it. Currently I'm also separating each by genre section into two parts: franchises and single titles. I can get rather OCD over organising my collection and unreasonably cannot stand filing a franchise where individual titles start with different letters under an overall series title within an otherwise ABC filing system. Or worse when you get movies like Flags of Our Fathers and Letters From Iwo Jima which we all know should be placed together but also don't have an actual series title, being simple companion movies. And the MCU is a minefield.
ReplyDeleteMy format mixing is kept to a minimum, but for franchises on mixed format I allow it. I was a late adopter of blu-ray, so even though I mostly only buy blu-ray now most of my movie collection is still DVD. I've replaced a few favourites if I see them cheap in second hand shops, but on-going franchises have left me where the start of them on DVD and more recent entries on blu.
For blu-rays I own a good number of special editions like Masters of Cinema, Arrow and HMV Premium. These I keep together. MoC and HMV are additionally numbered so ABC goes out of the window for those. Arrow aren't numbered but I still keep those separate from my 'normal' blu-rays.
So overall I currently have: DVDs by Genre (franchise then stand alone ABC), Mixed format franchises, Special Editions (DVD then Blu-Ray), and finally regular blu-ray ABC.
And another level of the movie organizing is to create an electronic catalog! A lot of software available for cataloging, you can try All My Movies, it downloads the movie details directly from IMDb and TMDB. I am talking about this one:

I fear alphabetical because I have to "shift" my DVDs every time I buy new ones.
ReplyDeleteI have 318 movies on DVD, which I keep in alphabetical order on a shelf. I do keep everything that starts with "The" in one place. Organizing them by the first letter of the next word in the title has never made sense to me. Why do people do that?
